the island

ANDROS IS AN AMAZING ISLAND

It belongs to the Cyclades and is characterized by lush vegetation, springs, small rivers and high (the tallest 1000m) mountains that create deep lush valleys full of laurels. The island can be reached from Athens (2 hours by boat , 43 miles from the port of Rafina), from Mykonos (2.5 hours by boat, 45 miles ),  and from Paros & Santorini via Mykonos. It has more than forty beaches, almost all of them approachable by car,  with magnificenty clear blue and  green waters.

Andros is a big island (400 km² with a coastal line of 176 km), guaranteeing that there is always something new for the visitor even after many many visits. In the summer, daily sunshine is almost guaranteed (nearly zero average rain days for the summer months, one for May and two for October, average day summer temperature 25°C (77°F).

THE ISLAND HAS A VERY RICH HISTORY

Starting from the neolithic years and expanding through the classical hellenistic and byzantine years. All these past civilisations have left their mark with statues that adorne the museums, ruins of temples next to which small churches, built in promontories, and byzantine monasteries provide the visitor with spectacular sea views.

Andros is also an island of culture and of the arts. The Goulandris museum at the Capital of Chora is a world class one, each year hosting high caliber artists. The archaeological museums at Chora and at Paleopolis (the antiquity capital) have important exhibits of the past. Kydoniefs museum specializes in contemporary greek paintings.  There are also 6 monasteries dating back to Byzantium, with important icon collections and breathtaking views. Moreover as a shipowners island, there is a cosmopolitan flair, for those interested.

ANDROS IS A PARADISE FOR WALKERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

Many paths are signed and all are easy to find and follow. The two hour walk to the cliff of its highest mountain, Kouvara (990m) where one can fnd  ruins of a temple and a small church, give an existential view over the blue Aegean sea. At www.androsroutes.gr you can find more about these heart and body fulfilling, year-round activities. There are also numerous very scenic villages inland, some of them with great sea views.

Agios Petros, with a 1km long sandy beach, is  just one of our neighbouring beaches and one of the best of the island. It is s excellent for swimming, and also has an experienced surfing centre (rentals and lessons).

TAVERNS, INFORMATION AND MEDICAL HEALTH NEARBY

Culinary pleasures are ambulant with formal restaurants, gasrtro-tavernas and simple but indeed gourmet beach tavernas. For our guests that want to dine at the villa without having to do in house cooking the near by well known gourmet Yannoulis taverna will be more than happy to cater.

There is a medical center at Gavrio, 3 km from the villas, and a most experienced doctor who serves that area of the island. A dentist is also available. Being traditionally an agricultural, fisheries and shipowners community, Andros has escaped from massive tourism and appeals to the more sophisticated visitor. We, as your hosts and lovers of the island, fore more than three decades (and experienced world travellers) will be eager and proud to offer you information and tips so as to make your first visit to Andros, be that the case, the start of an enduring love relationship for the senses and the mind.
